Murphy Takes A Big Step In His Brewers Career -- Given 3-Year Contract As MLB Manager

Pat Murhpy, a long-time member of the Brewers’ organization, is taking the next step up. He was named the 20th manager in Brewers history, signing a three-year contract this week that runs through 2026.

The Brewers also named Rickie Weeks the teams associated manager.

“Pat Murphy brings a wealth of experience, knowledege and passion for the game of baseball as well as a familiarity with the Brewers organization, players, staff and culture,” said Senior Vice Present/General Manager Matt Arnold. “Pat has been a significant contributor in the run of recent success of unprecedented success in franchise history. We are pleased to have Pat remain in the Brewers family and excited to name him manager today.”

Murphy, who turns 65 on Nov. 28, spent the last eight seasons as bench coach, a position he assumed on Nov. 2, 2015, replaced Jerry Narron. Prior to joining the Brewers, he served as the interim manager of the San Diego Padres in 2015, replacing Bud Black on June 16 that season. The Padres finished (42-54, .438).

Muphy also m,anaged in the Padres farm system from ,spending time A Short-Season A Eugene (2011-12), Triple-A Tucson (2013) and Triple-A El Paso (2014-15), and was a special assistant to baseball operations in 2010.

Prior to his time in professional baseball, Murphy distrinqused himelf in the college ranks, spending 25 years as head coach at Maryville College (1983)Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (1986-87), the University of Notre Dame (1988-94) and Arizona State University (1995-2009) He compiled a 1,000-457-5 (.685) recvord as a coach at the college level, and was on pace to becoming the winningest coach in NCAA history before he accepted the opportunies at the professional level.

At the collegiate level he went 629-284-1 (.689) at Arizona State, earning 1998 National Coach of the Year honors after leading Arizona State to the National Championship game. He earned PAC-10 Coach of the Year honors four times (2000, 2007-09). At Notre Dame., Murphy went 318-116-1 (.732) and was selected the Midwest Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year in 1989, 1990 and 1992.

Weeks, 41, joins the big-league coaching staff after spending the last the last two seasons as the assitant to player development. The former second baseman spent 11 of his 14 seasons in the major leagues with the Brewers. An NL All-Star selection in 2011, Weeks is a member of the Brewers Wall of honor.

Weeks is among the all-time franchise leaders in runs (6th, 684), walks (6th, 492) stolen baes (7th, 126) triples (8th, 32), at-bats (9th, 4,056) games (10th, 1,142), doubles (10th, 203), extra base hits (10th, 383) and total bases (10th, 1,720).
