From the Offices of Stats Perform: A Look at Weekend Series That Began Friday

DIAMONDBACKS (18-27) at ROCKIES (15-29)

● The Diamondbacks are 4-3 against the Rockies this season but lost two of three meetings in their previous visit to Coors Field from April 6-8. Arizona allowed at least seven runs in all three games and is 17-4 against Colorado since 2018 when permitting four runs or fewer, but 9-25 during that span when giving up five runs or more.

● Arizona has scored two runs or fewer in each of its last 10 losses for the second time in franchise history, previously doing so between August 27-September 11, 2014. The Diamondbacks are 1-20 (.048) when scoring three or less runs in a game this season, while the Rockies are 1-19. Only the Tigers (1-21, .045) have a lower winning percentage when scoring under four runs.

● Colorado hitters have struck out a total of 78 times over the team’s last six games and have fanned 10 times or more in each of those contests. The Rockies have had a seven-game streak with double-digit strikeouts at the plate twice previously in the same season, first in 2015 (May 13-19) and then in 2019 (June 20-26).

● Nick Ahmed’s .429 average at Coors Field since 2019 is the highest of any player at the venue with at least 50 plate appearances during that time frame. Ahmed has collected multiple hits in seven of his last 10 visits to Denver.

● Yonathan Daza is 12-for-20 (.600) over his last five games at Coors Field, recording multiple hits in each. The Rockies’ record for most consecutive home games with two or more hits in the same season is eight, most recently done by Todd Helton from August 29-September 13, 1999.

● Trevor Story has homered in each of the Rockies’ last two meetings with the Diamondbacks and is one of three players with five career home runs off Arizona’s Madison Bumgarner, along with Carlos Gonzalez and Wil Myers.

ORIOLES (17-26) at NATIONALS (17-23)

● The Orioles swept a three-game series in D.C. last August, outscoring the Nationals, 22-5. Baltimore’s only other three-game road sweep against the Nationals came in 2015.

● The Orioles are 6-18 at home but 11-8 on the road this season. Only two other major-league teams have a winning record on the road and a losing record at home this season (the Brewers and Rays), and no team has as wide of a gulf in winning percentage as Baltimore (329 points).

● The Nationals scored 17 runs last Friday against the Diamondbacks but they have scored only 19 runs in six subsequent games, with no more than four runs in any of those games.

● Trea Turner is one of four major-league shortstops leading his team in home runs, along with Brandon Crawford (SF), Fernando Tatis, Jr. (SD), and Javier Baez (ChC; tied for the team lead).

● Trey Mancini’s six-game RBI streak is tied with Nolan Arenado for the longest current streak in the major leagues and it’s one shy of the longest streak in the majors this season (J.D. Martinez, 7 straight from April 3-11). Mancini is the only major-league player who has at least 20 percent of his team’s RBIs this season, and he’s at 24.2 percent.

● Jorge Lopez has not thrown six innings in any start this season and his most pitches in a game this year is 81. Stephen Strasburg allowed three home runs in his last start, tying his third highest total in a major-league game.

RED SOX (27-18) at PHILLIES (22-22)

● The Phillies have not won any of their last seven home series against the Red Sox, their longest current streak against one team. Philadelphia’s last home series win over Boston came in June 2011.

● The Red Sox have won their last four interleague games, dating back to last season, and have not allowed more than two runs in any of those games (2, 1, 1, 0).

● The Phillies have hit only four home runs over their last seven games, and three of those came in one game, against the Blue Jays on May 16.

● The Red Sox are the only major-league team that has two players batting .300 with a .400 OBP and slugging .500 this season: Xander Bogaerts (.344/.402/.589) and J.D. Martinez (.331/.404/.608).

● Bryce Harper has only two hits in his last five games (both on Tuesday), his fewest in any five-game span this season.

● Martin Perez’s strikeouts per nine innings rate this season (8.4) would be his highest in any of his nine seasons in the major leagues. His highest rate came in 2019 (7.3). Over his last seven interleague home games—facing A.L. teams without their designated hitter—Aaron Nola is 3-0 with a 1.19 ERA, and has not allowed more than one run in any of those games.

WHITE SOX (26-16) at YANKEES (25-19)

● Gio Urshela and Aaron Judge each had pinch-hit RBIs in the Yankees’ win over the Rangers yesterday. Before that, the Yankees’ only pinch-hit RBIs this season were on Urshela’s threerun home run against the Orioles on May 14.

● Carlos Rodon allowed four runs to the Royals on Saturday after he had allowed only three runs over his first five starts of a season. Jordan Montgomery has not thrown 100 pitches in any of his last 37 starts and he has not even reached 90 pitches in any of his last 10 starts, including postseason.

TWINS (15-28) at INDIANS (23-18)

The Twins won their last game here, 10-2, on April 28, ending their streak of 37 straight games scoring fewer than 10 runs at Cleveland. Their previous double-digit run total at Cleveland was in a 13-5 win on August 3, 2016.

● Each of the last nine games between these teams has been decided by either one or two runs.

● Spencer Turnbull had a career record of 9-25 (.265) entering his no-hitter against the Mariners on Tuesday. He is the first pitcher in the modern era to throw a no-hitter after entering the game with a sub-.300 career winning percentage (minimum 10 decisions).

CUBS (22-21) at CARDINALS (25-18)

● Chicago and St. Louis renew their rivalry for the first time this season, opening a three-game weekend series. The Cubs have won the season series over the Cardinals just twice in the last 10 seasons after a 5-5 record during last year’s abbreviated season.

● The Cardinals got a pair of wins Tuesday and Wednesday over the Pirates despite facing right-handed starters. St. Louis has a .691 OPS against right-handed starters this season and a .804 OPS against left-handed starters. That +.113 difference is the second-largest leftover-right gap in the NL (Col, +.126).

● The Cubs took three of four from the Nationals earlier this week and have won five of their last seven games. Through May 10, Chicago was batting .224, 14th in the National League (Mil, .217). Over the last 10 days, the Cubs are batting .293, best in the NL.

● Nolan Arenado failed to go deep Wednesday against the Pirates, ending a streak of four straight games with a home run. Arenado’s .758 slugging percentage this month ranks second in the majors, and his career .934 OPS in May is his highest in any month.

● Kris Bryant has 10 home runs and 14 doubles, despite having just one extra-base hit in his last seven games. Both his .615 slugging percentage this season and 1.017 OPS are the best of his career in his first 40 games of a season.

● Jack Flaherty improved to an MLB-best 8-0 after beating Pittsburgh on Wednesday, and the Cardinals have won all nine games that he has started this season. St. Louis has a +50 run differential in those nine games and a -30 run differential when any other pitcher starts this season.

● Brandon Crawford is one of four major-league shortstops leading his team in home runs, along with Trea Turner (Wsh), Fernando Tatis, Jr. (SD), and Javier Baez (ChC; tied for the team lead). Crawford’s home run rate this season (one every 10.8 at-bats) would be the best of his career.

● Trevor Bauer has 77 strikeouts, the most ever by a pitcher in his first nine games for the Dodgers, two more than Hideo Nomo had at that point, in 1995. Alex Wood is the first Giants pitcher to win his first five decisions as a starter for the team since Noah Lowry in 2004.

MARINERS (21-23) at PADRES (27-17)

● The Mariners and Padres split their six matchups last season, all in San Diego. The Padres had won seven of the previous eight, holding the M’s to 2.4 runs per game.
