Oberg Makes Move From Player To Member Of Rockies Front Office Official

Technically, Scott Oberg was on the Rockies roster the last two years, although he spent both seasons on the Injured List, the victim of an ongoing battle with blood clots, which dated back to the 2016 season. During that time, Oberg was in uniform frequently, but his biggest impact on the franchise was his focus on a post-playing career.

He battled four occurences of the blood clots in his right arm since 2016, making comeback attempts in spring training in 2020 and 2021, but was sidelined by recurring blood clot issues both times.

On Tuesday, having fulfilled his long-term contract as a player, the official career transition became official. Oberg assumed a part-time role as a special assistant in baseball operations. He not only will mentor relief pitchers, but will work with the front office as well as continue to embrace scouting and preparation for the draft.

Oberg issued a statement on his decision:

“I have accepted a part-time position with the Rockies and will no longer be pursuing the game I’ve loved my whole life, as a player. I cannot thank those closest to me enough; from my family, friends, teammates and especially having the unwavering support of my wife (Diana). I could not have been able to accomplish anything without any of you. Love you all.”

A 15th-round draft choice of the Rockies in 2012, Oberg appeared in 259 games from 2015 through 2019. He went 18-8 with seven saves and a 3.85 ERA.
