Stats, Inc: Red Sox-Orioles, Rangers-Mariners Open Weekend Series Thursday

From the offices of Stats, Inc.

RED SOX (76-82) at ORIOLES (99-59)

● The Red Sox and Orioles meet for the second time this month, after not facing each other since April. Baltimore leads the season series, 5-4, and are looking for their first winning record against Boston since 2017 (10-9).

● Since August 27, the Red Sox are 7-21 (.250), the worst record in the MLB. If the Red Sox lose one game this series, they will end the season with fewer than 80 wins for the second straight year. The only other time Boston has done that in the last 50 years was 2014-2015.

● Rafael Devers has 172 career home runs with the Red Sox – tied for most home runs prior to turning 27 in franchise history (Jim Rice).

● With their next win, Baltimore can clinch at least a share of the best record in the AL for the first time since 1997. The Orioles would be the 11th different AL team this century to have the best record in the league for a season.

● Gunnar Henderson has 28 home runs and 99 runs scored this season. With his next run scored, he will become the first Orioles rookie all-time with 25 HR and 100 runs scored and the first in the AL since Mike Trout in 2012 (30 HR, 129 R).

● Dean Kremer is 5-0, with a 3.57 ERA in 10 starts against the AL East this season. Kremer would be the second undefeated Orioles starter against the AL East since 1969 (Erik Bedard: 6-0 in 2007; minimum six games started).

RANGERS (89-69) at MARINERS (85-73)

● The Mariners have a 36-21 record (.632) against the Rangers since the start of the 2020 season, their third best against any AL opponent over that span. However, the Rangers have won the last seven games and 11 of the last 14.

● With a Logan Gilbert win tonight, the Mariners would have two 14-game winners (also Luis Castillo) for the first time since 2014 (Felix Hernandez and Hisashi Iwakuma). The only other MLB team this season with two 14-game winners is the Braves (Strider and Morton).

● J.P. Crawford leads the AL with 93 walks this season. He would be the first Mariner to lead the league in walks. The last shortstop to lead either league in walks for a season was Pee Wee Reese with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947 (Reese tied Hank Greenberg at 104).

● Since 2000, five Rangers starters have had an ERA of 2.95 or better in a season in which they started a minimum of 10 games with the team: Yu Darvish (2013), Kyle Gibson (2021), Martín Pérez (2022), C.J. Wilson (2011) and Jordan Montgomery in 2023 (2.92 ERA).

● Evan Carter has a 1.146 OPS, the highest in history by a Rangers hitter through the first 19 games of his career (min. 50 PA).

● Julio Rodríguez needs one more home run this season to become the first player in MLB history with 60 home runs and 60 stolen bases in his first two MLB seasons combined.
