Stats Perform: Rockies Worse Nighmare, A Dodger Visit to Coors Field

DODGERS (96-59) at ROCKIES (56-99)

● Since the start of the 2014 season, the Dodgers have won 112 games against the Rockies. That is the third-most victories by any MLB team against a single opponent in that span. It trails only the Dodgers’ win totals against the Padres (118) and D-Backs (113).

● Chase Anderson has the most games started without a win in MLB this season (16). The only pitchers in MLB history with more starts without a win in a single season are Paolo Espino last season (19) and Ryne Stanek in 2019 (27, mostly as an opener).

● Nolan Jones is one of six Rockies players since 2000 to have a .900 OPS (min. 350 PA), 15 home runs, 15 stolen bases, and 20 doubles in a season. Charlie Blackmon, Matt Holliday and Troy Tulowitzki did it once, while Carlos González and Trevor Story did it twice.

● Emmet Sheehan has an 8.57 ERA on the road, the seventh worst among MLB pitchers with at least 20 innings. The gap between his road and home ERA (2.97) is 5.60, the largest in baseball among pitchers with at least 50 innings.

● Freddie Freeman leads MLB with 57 doubles, which is 15 more than the second best (Corey Seager, 42). The only season in MLB history with a larger gap between the doubles leader and second place was 1931: Earl Webb led with 67 doubles, 20 ahead of Dale Alexander.

● The Rockies have a 5.63 ERA in 2023. Only four teams have had a worse collective ERA since 2000: the 2021 Orioles (5.84), the 2001 Rangers (5.71), the 2003 Rangers (5.67), and the 2006 Royals (5.65).

REDS (80-77) at GUARDIANS (74-83)

● Since 2014, the Guardians have a 28-16 record (.636) against the Reds. It’s their best record against any National League opponent over that span and third best overall.

● Since 2018, Lucas Giolito has conceded 147 home runs. Only Jordan Lyles (151) has surrendered more. He has also surrendered 352 walks in that same span, the most in MLB.

● Josh Naylor is hitting .357 with runners in scoring position, the sixth best mark in the AL (min. 100 PA w/RISP). It’s also the best mark in for Cleveland since Michael Brantley hit .376 and David Murphy hit .360 in 2014 (min. 100 w/runners in scoring position).

● Since 2000, just four Reds pitchers have had a 3.70 ERA or better over 100+ innings pitched in their rookie seasons: Travis Wood (3.51 in 2010), Tony Cingrani (2.92 in 2013), Nick Lodolo (3.66 in 2022) and Andrew Abbott (3.70 in 2023 so far).

● Elly De La Cruz, Spencer Steer and Matt McLain have 386 total strikeouts, the most by a trio of rookies in franchise history since 1910. Only Ezequiel Tovar, Brenton Doyle and Nolan Jones of the Rockies have more (415) among rookie trios in MLB this year.

● Alexis Díaz has a 2.42 ERA through the first two seasons of his career (2022-23). It’s the lowest mark by a Reds pitcher through two seasons since Rob Dibble had a 1.99 mark in 1988-89 (min. 60 IP).

NATIONALS (69-88) at ORIOLES (97-59)

● The Orioles have a 41-27 (.603) record against the Nationals since the start of the 2010 season. It’s their second-best record against any single opponent over that span (min. 20 games).

● At 2.57, Kyle Bradish has the second-best ERA in the American League while pitching at home (min. 60 IP in home games). It’s also the lowest ERA at home by an Orioles pitcher since Bud Norris (2.44) and Chris Tillman (2.54) in 2014 (min. 60 IP at home).

● Adley Rutschman is the only catcher in Orioles history to have more than 150 walks through the first two seasons of his career (153 between 2022 and 2023).

● Josiah Gray has given up 4.30 walks per nine innings (BB/9) since the start of the 2022 season, the second-highest mark in MLB over that span, after Blake Snell’s 4.38 mark (min. 300 IP).

● Lane Thomas and Joey Meneses have 35 doubles each. It’s the first time since 2019 that at least two Nationals hitters have 35+ doubles in the same season (Anthony Rendon - 44, Trey Turner – 37).

● Patrick Corbin has allowed 96 home runs since 2021, which is the most by a Nationals pitcher over a three-year span in team history.

PIRATES (74-82) at PHILLIES (87-69)

● The Phillies were 20-7 versus the Pirates from 2018 through 2022, but they’ve lost two of their three games against them this season (August 26-28 in Pittsburgh). The Pirates’ have not won a series in Philadelphia since July 2017.

● Pittsburgh has hit at least one home run in each of its last eight games (13 total homers). It’s the Pirates’ longest home-run streak this season and their third longest homer streak over the last four seasons. They had a 10-game streak and a nine-game streak in 2022.

● Mitch Keller won his last start (Sept. 20 at Wrigley Field) despite allowing seven runs in 5.2 innings. It was only the fifth time since 1977 that a Pirates pitcher recorded a win in a game in which he gave up at least seven runs. The other wins of that kind were by Rick Rhoden (1982), Josh Fogg (2003), Kris Benson (2004) and Gerrit Cole (2017).

● The Phillies’ current five-game winning streak is one shy of their season long. Philadelphia won six consecutive games twice during a 15-game stretch in June (June 3-9 and 13-18).

● Kyle Schwarber has 45 home runs, 124 walks and 210 strikeouts this season. Schwarber’s 379 so-called “true outcomes” this year are the third most in one season in MLB history. Mark McGwire set the record with 387 in 1998 and Aaron Judge tied that mark in 2017.

● Aaron Nola has recorded 200 or more strikeouts in a season four times in his MLB/Phillies career (2018, ’19, ’21, ’22) and he has 194 strikeouts this season. Steve Carlton (seven) is the only pitcher with more 200-strikeout seasons for the Phillies than Nola.

ROYALS (54-102) at TIGERS (73-83)

● Detroit has won seven of its 10 meetings with Kansas City this year. The Tigers have won five of the last six meetings at home after sweeping a three-game set from September 27-29 last season; the Royals have not scored more than four runs in any of those six games.

● Kansas City has won six straight after sweeping Cleveland and Houston, taking all three games at Minute Maid Park for the club’s first road sweep since August 2021 at Wrigley Field. Since that Wrigley Field series, the Royals have the worst road series record in MLB (14-40-4, .276) and are now tied with the Nationals for the fewest road sweeps in that span.

● Zack Greinke has not earned a win since May 3 against Baltimore – his 21 appearances since then mark a career-long winless streak, while his 18-start win drought is tied with Vida Blue (Sept 1982 to July 1983) for the longest streak in franchise history.

● Detroit split a four-game set in Oakland to close out its final road trip of the season, closing the series with its 13th shutout of the season – tied for third in the AL behind the Mariners (16) and Blue Jays (14). That is the most by a Tigers pitching staff since 2011 (14).

● Miguel Cabrera will begin his final homestand as he will retire at the end of the season. His 997 plate appearances against Kansas City rank second all-time (Paul Konerko, 1056), while his 266 hits against the Royals are the most against the franchise.

● Reese Olson has allowed just two hits, including a solo home run, in each of his last two starts and has gone 3-1 with a 1.40 ERA and 0.66 WHIP over his four September starts (25.2 innings). The rookie had a 5.96 ERA in five August starts (22.2 innings).

YANKEES (79-77) at BLUE JAYS (87-69)

● The Yankees have won their last six road series against the Blue Jays, including a series played in Buffalo in June 2021. Only one team has ever had a longer streak of road series wins versus the Blue Jays. The Red Sox won nine consecutive series in Toronto from September 2016 through July 2019.

● The Yankees lost eight consecutive road series from July 1 through August 27 (the team’s longest such streak since 1908) but they’ve won each of their four road series since then, at Detroit (3-1), Houston (3-0), Boston (3-1) and Pittsburgh (2-1).

● Aaron Judge has hit five home runs over his last five games in Toronto, including four in a four-game series this year (May 15-18). Judge has hit 16 home runs in the 41 games he’s played at Rogers Centre. His average of one home run every 9.0 at-bats there is the best by any player with 15 or more homers in that ballpark, which opened in 1989.

● Michael King is 1-2 with a 1.27 ERA, 42 strikeouts and only four walks over 28.1 innings in the six starts since joining the Yankees’ rotation on August 24. King’s ERA is the second lowest in MLB among pitchers with six or more starts over that span (Blake Snell, 0.47).

● The Blue Jays were charged with two errors in each of their first two games this month, but they’ve committed only three errors in 20 games since then (one each by Chris Bassitt, Matt Chapman and Alejandro Kirk).

● Kevin Gausman is 2-0 with a 0.90 ERA in his three games against the Yankees this season, with at least 10 strikeouts in each game. Only three other pitchers had 10 or more strikeouts in each of three consecutive games versus the Yankees within one season: Sam McDowell (1969), Pedro Martinez (2001) and Chris Sale (2017).

MARLINS (81-75) at METS (71-85)

● The Mets have won their season series against the Marlins in each of the last six years: 12-7 in 2018, 13-6 in 2019, 6-4 in 2020, 10-9 in 2021, 13-6 in 2022 and 7-3 with three games left to play this season. The Marlins’ only season series victory against the Mets since 2014 was in 2017, when Miami won 12 of the 19 games.

● The Marlins need one more win to clinch only their eighth season with a winning percentage above .500 in franchise history. The only other MLB teams with fewer than nine winning seasons since 1993 (the Marlins’ inaugural year) are the Pirates (four) and Royals (six).

● Jake Burger and Josh Bell have each played in all 48 games for the Marlins since August 2, when they made their debuts for Miami after being acquired in separate trades. Burger leads the Marlins in batting average (.313), hits (55), runs scored (27, tied) and runs batted in (27, tied) since that date. Bell’s 11 home runs since August 2 are tied for the team high.

● Braxton Garrett has allowed no more than one run in 15 starts this season, which ties him with the Pirates’ Johan Oviedo for the second most such starts by an MLB pitcher this year. Blake Snell has the most such starts this season with 17.

● The Mets lost all four games in their weekend series at Philadelphia. It was the first time the Mets were swept in a series of four games or longer since June 24-27, 2019, also in a fourgame set in Philadelphia. The Mets played 43 such series between those two sweeps.

● Joey Lucchesi has not allowed a home run in any of the last 89 at-bats against him in the major leagues. (His last home run allowed in the majors was by Kris Bryant on May 7). It’s the second longest such streak of Lucchesi’s major-league career. He went 92 at-bats without giving up a home run as a rookie with the Padres in 2018.

RAYS (95-62) at RED SOX (76-80)

● Tampa Bay has taken nine of the 11 meetings with Boston this season, including three of four at Fenway Park in June. The Rays have won the season series against the Red Sox each year since 2019 and have gone 51-27 (.654) against Boston in that span.

● The Rays blew a 5-0 lead on Saturday before walking off with a 7-6 win. They have blown a lead in 64 games this season – third most in the AL (White Sox, 68; Angels, 66) – but have lost just 29 of those games, tied for sixth fewest in MLB.

● Yandy Diaz went 4-for-4 in Saturday’s win; he is hitting .429 with 10 extra-base hits in his last 15 games. His .328 average this season ranks second in the AL (Corey Seager, Tex - .331) and is on track to be the highest mark in franchise history.

● Zach Eflin’s 1.03 WHIP this season is the lowest mark by a pitcher in his first season in the AL since Fergie Jenkins with the Rangers in 1974 (1.01; minimum 162.0 IP).

● Since taking a 7-3 win at Tropicana Field on September 4, the Red Sox have gone an MLBworst 4-14 (.222). Boston is averaging 3.56 runs per game in that span, third worst in MLB behind the Athletics (3.11) and Angels (3.42).

● Tanner Houck has gone 2-4 with a 5.10 ERA in eight starts against divisional opponents this season – one of those wins came on September 14 when he pitched six shutout innings against the Yankees.

CUBS (82-74) at BRAVES (100-56)

● The Cubs won five of their first six games at Truist Park (3-0 in 2017, 2-1 in 2018) but they are 2-8 in Atlanta since then (0-3 in 2019, 1-3 in 2021, 1-2 in 2022).

● Cubs relievers pitched 12.0 innings and allowed no runs and six hits in Chicago’s three-game sweep against the Rockies at Wrigley Field. In the previous two games (home losses to the Pirates), Cubs relievers gave up 12 runs and 11 hits (including four HR) in 9.0 innings.

● Justin Steele has lost his last two starts, allowing six runs in each game. It is the first time Steele has allowed five or more runs in each of two consecutive games and the first time he allowed more than 10 runs over a two-game span.

● The Braves have won 100 or more games in a season for the 10th time in franchise history and an MLB-high eighth time since 1993. The only other teams with even half as many 100- win seasons since 1993 are the Yankees (seven), Astros (five) and Dodgers (four).

● Ronald Acuna Jr. has 99 hits in home games this year (third most in MLB) and he leads the majors with 111 hits in road games. Since 1900, only four Braves players had 100 or more hits both at home and on the road in one season: Hank Aaron (1959), Felipe Alou (1968), Ralph Garr (1974) and Marquis Grissom (1996).

● Bryce Elder is 12-0 in 25 starts this season in which he allowed no more than four runs. That is the most such starts this season by an MLB pitcher without a loss in one of those games. The Cubs’ starter tonight, Justin Steele, is second at 23 such starts this year (15-0).

CARDINALS (68-88) at BREWERS (88-68)

● The Cardinals and Brewers face off for the fourth and final time this season, with Milwaukee leading the season series, 6-4. If Milwaukee wins one game of the series, they will finish with their first winning record against St. Louis since 2018 (11-8).

● With the next Pittsburgh win or St. Louis loss, the Cardinals will secure last place in the division for the first time since 1990 (NL East). This includes 138 days being in last place outright – second most days in franchise history (1897 St. Louis Browns – 146).

● Paul Goldschmidt has 25 home runs and 79 RBI this season, his eighth season of 25 HR and 75 RBI since 2013 (tied for most in MLB over that span). This includes nine seasons of at least 150 games played – most in MLB.

● The Brewers need two more wins to reach 90 for the third time under manager Craig Counsell (also: 2018 and 2021). Counsell would become the first Brewers manager with three 90-win seasons all-time.

● Willy Adames is leading the Brewers in home runs (24) and RBI (78) – he would become the third Milwaukee shortstop to lead the team in both categories (Robin Yount, 1984 and Bill Hall, 2006). Adames is the first Brewers shortstop with 20 HR in three straight seasons.

● With four more strikeouts, Corbin Burnes will reach 200 for the third consecutive year, tying the longest active streak in the MLB. Three straight would also be second longest in Brewers history (Yovani Gallardo – four straight, 2009-2012).

ATHLETICS (48-108) at TWINS (83-73)

● Minnesota has won eight of the nine meetings with Oakland since the start of last season. Minnesota swept a three-game set at Target Field last May; they had won just four of the previous 11 meetings there dating back to 2018.

● Oakland split a four-game set against Detroit, closing its final homestand at the Coliseum with a 2-8 record and finishing 26-55 (.321) at home, the club’s worst home record in its 56 seasons in California and tied for fifth worst in franchise history.

● Paul Blackburn allowed two runs Tuesday but fell to Seattle for his second loss in as many starts. Blackburn has a 3.68 ERA in 12 second-half starts this season after posting a 4.86 mark in his eight appearances (seven starts) before the break.

● Friday’s win over the Angels clinched the Twins’ third division title in five years; prior to Rocco Baldelli’s tenure, they had not won the division since 2010. The Twins lead the majors with 6.09 runs per game this month and rank fourth in MLB with a 3.51 ERA; their 14-8 (.636) record in September is tied for second-best behind the Padres (15-7, .682).

● Jorge Polanco had two doubles in Friday’s win over the Angels and a home run in Sunday’s victory, his fourth in 17 games this month. The longtime Twin has a .911 OPS in 39 home games compared to a .698 mark in 38 games away from Target Field.

● Bailey Ober has allowed a home run in 10 straight appearances but surrendered just two runs on three hits over five innings in Cincinnati on Wednesday. Ober has a 5.40 ERA and in his 10 starts since the All-Star break; he had a 2.61 ERA in 14 first-half outings.

DIAMONDBACKS (82-74) at WHITE SOX (60-96)

● The Diamondbacks have won eight straight against the White Sox dating back to 2014. It is Arizona’s longest winning streak against an AL opponent all-time and tied for seventh longest against any opponent.

● Since starting his career in 2018, Touki Toussaint has 1.66 strikeouts per walk (SO/BB). That’s the fourth worst mark in MLB over that span (min. 250 IP).

● Luis Robert Jr. has 38 home runs and 20 stolen bases in 2023. He is the 12th centerfielder in MLB history to reach 35 HR and 20 SB in a season and the first player in franchise history at any position to do it.

● Zach Davies has a 6.81 ERA in 79.1 innings in 2023. It is the third-highest single season ERA in franchise history and the highest since Russ Ortiz’s 6.89 ERA in 2005 (min. 75 IP).

● Corbin Carroll has stolen 51 bases and has only been caught five times this season. His 91.1 stolen base percentage in 2023 is the highest in a single season in franchise history among players with at least 30 steals.

● The White Sox have lost 96 in their first season with Pedro Grifol as manager. That is the second-most losses in a manager’s first season with the Sox behind Lew Fonseca’s 102 losses in 1932.
