Series Starting Thursday: Mets Look To Regain Command In Series With Nationals

From the Offices of Stats Perform

NATIONALS (43-59) at METS (47-54)

● The Nationals were 5-14 versus the Mets last season but they’ve won four of their seven games against them this year, including two of three in New York. Washington has outhomered the Mets, 6-1, in their seven games this season. The Mets’ only home run against the Nationals this year is the one rookie Brett Baty hit at Citi Field on April 27.

● The Nationals have scored at least five runs in each of their last six games (five wins, one loss). It’s the Nationals’ longest such streak since they scored five or more runs in each of their final six games of the 2019 regular season. Washington hasn’t had a longer streak of five-run games since its seven-game in May 2015.

● Joey Meneses is 12-for-31 (.387) in the seven games he’s played against the Mets this year. His 12 hits versus the Mets are the second most in the majors this season (Luis Arraez, 14).

● Josiah Gray allowed 19 home runs in road games last season (81 innings), the most of any National League pitcher, but he has given up only six homers on the road this year (69 innings).

● The Mets had only four hits in their 3-1 loss to the Yankees last night. It was the 19th time the Mets had four or fewer hits in a game this season (two wins, 17 losses), the most of any National League team and tied for second most in the majors with the White Sox, behind the Royals (20). The Nationals have had only six such games this season, the fewest in MLB.

● Kodai Senga is 3-2 with a 2.50 ERA and .177 opponents batting average in his nine starts at Citi Field and 4-3 with a 4.07 ERA and .231 opponents BA in his nine starts in road games.

CUBS (50-51) at CARDINALS (46-57)

● The Cubs are 5-4 against the Cardinals this season, winning four of seven games at Wrigley Field and one of two games in London, England. The Cubs were 2-7 in St. Louis last season, and they have lost their last six games at Busch Stadium.

● The Cubs’ 10-7 win over the White Sox yesterday was the 15th time they scored 10 or more runs in a game this season, second most in the majors behind the Rangers (20). The Cubs had a double-digit run total in only six games last season.

● Cody Bellinger’s current five-game RBI streak (11 total RBI) ties the season high by a Cubs player set by Christopher Morel (May 17-23). Bellinger’s streak is one game shy of his MLB career high. He had six-game RBI streaks for the Dodgers in April 2019 and August 2022.

● Justin Steele is 3-0 with a 3.86 ERA in his three games against the Cardinals this season. The only other MLB pitchers with as many as three wins against one team this season are Minnesota’s Pablo Lopez (3-0 vs. Royals) and Houston’s Framber Valdez (3-0 vs. Athletics).

● The Cardinals have won their last five home games and they’re 7-2 at Busch Stadium in July. They had a losing record in St. Louis in each of the first four calendar months this season: March (0-1), April (5-7), May (7-8) and June (2-7).

● Miles Mikolas is 5-3 with a 2.51 ERA in his 18 career games (16 starts) against the Cubs. Mikolas’ ERA versus the Cubs is the lowest among current MLB pitchers who’ve made 10 or more starts against them. Rounding out the top five are Clayton Kershaw (2.55), Gerrit Cole (2.61), Max Scherzer (2.82) and Sonny Gray (2.98).

GUARDIANS (51-51) at WHITE SOX (41-62)

● The Guardians have not scored more than three runs in any of their six games against the White Sox this season (two wins, four losses).

● The Guardians have hit two or more home runs in seven of their 12 games since the All-Star break. They hit multiple home runs in only 12 of their 90 games this year before the break.

● Bo Naylor, who had two total home runs in his first 26 career games, homered twice on Tuesday against the Royals at the age of 23 years and 154 days. Since 1990, only two Cleveland rookies have been younger at the time of their first multi-homer game – Manny Ramirez (21-96 in 1993) and Lonnie Chisenhall (22-340 in 2011).

● Rookie Tanner Bibee is 4-0 with a 1.82 ERA in his last six games (June 18 to date). The only other rookie with at least four wins since that date is the Astros J.P. France (4-1). Bibee’s last four wins were all against National League teams.

● The White Sox are 10-2 this season in home games against their four AL Central rivals (3-0 vs. Detroit and Kansas City, 2-1 vs. Cleveland and Minnesota) and 11-25 at U.S. Cellular Field this year versus all other MLB teams.

● Dylan Cease is 4-3 in his 21 starts this season. He leads all major-league pitchers with 14 no-decision starts this year. The White Sox are 11-10 in games Cease has started in 2023.
