Stats Inc. Bullet Points: Dodgers Looking To Make Statement Against Rockies

ROCKIES (2-2) at DODGERS (2-2)

● The Dodgers went 11-8 against Colorado last season. The eight losses were their most against any single opponent in 2022, with the Dodgers having no more than five losses to any of their three other NL West opponents last season.

● Colorado’s relievers didn’t allow a home run in their season-opening series against San Diego, and boast an ERA of 3.29 through four games. Last season, the Rockies bullpen had an ERA of 4.82, which ranked last in the majors.

● Ryan Feltner posted a K/BB ratio of 2.40 in his rookie campaign last season, the best mark by a Rockies rookie (min. 75 IP) since German Marquez in 2017 (3.00).

● Los Angeles allowed two or fewer runs in each of its first four games, the first team to have such a streak to begin their season since the Dodgers themselves in 2018 (also four straight). The Dodgers last did so in 5+ straight games to begin a season in 1963 (5).

● The Dodgers went 5-1 in Michael Groves’ six starts of his first season in 2022, with Groves owning a 1-0 record in those starts. He allowed 4+ earned runs in a start just once in those six starts – his final game of the season which came against Colorado (4 ER in 5.0 IP).

● Through four games, CJ Cron has seven RBI with five extra-base hits. He is the fifth player in Rockies history to hit those marks through four games in any season, and the first since Trevor Story did so in 2016 (11 RBI, 6 XBH).

METS (3-1) at BREWERS (2-1)

● The Mets took four of the six meetings last season, winning two games in each three-game set. Milwaukee has won 15 of its last 20 home games against New York dating back to 2016, including a nine-game win streak that was snapped in last season’s series.

● New York took three games of a four-game set in Miami to open the season, with its pitching staff posting a 2.06 ERA in the series. The Mets’ bullpen allowed just one run and eight hits over 13.2 innings for a 0.66 ERA and a .170 opponent batting average.

● Carlos Carrasco is slated to make his season debut on Monday. He got a first-pitch strike on 68.3 percent of his batters faced last season, the fourth-highest mark in MLB (min. 500 batters faced).

● Milwaukee was blanked on Opening Day but came from behind to win each of the last two games of a three-game set at Wrigley Field. Last season, the Brewers had 40 come-frombehind victories, tied for second in the NL – only the Dodgers (48) had more.

● Freddy Peralta has a 0.99 WHIP since the start of the 2021 season, sixth-best in MLB among pitchers with at least 200 innings pitched in that span. Peralta’s .190 opponent average last season ranked fourth in the NL (min. 300 batters faced).

● Tommy Pham has a .663 slugging at American Family Field, second-highest among active batters behind Nolan Arenado (.748; min. 100 PA). Pham is slashing .317/.375/,663 with eight home runs in 28 games at the ballpark and is riding a five-game hit streak.

GIANTS (1-2) at WHITE SOX (2-2)

● The White Sox have won 12 of the 16 all-time meetings with the Giants, including wins in each of the last five matchups. Most recently, the White Sox swept a three-game set at Oracle Park from July 1-3 last season, outscoring the Giants, 19-7.

● San Francisco was blanked twice in a three-game set at Yankee Stadium to open the season, but won the middle game, 7-5. It is the first time in Giants franchise history that the club has been blanked in two of its first three games of a season.

● Anthony DeSclafani will make his season debut after managing only 19.0 innings last season due to a lingering ankle injury. The 32-year-old had career bests in ERA (3.17) and WHIP (1.09) while pitching 167.2 innings in his first year with the Giants in 2021.

● The White Sox split a four-game set in Houston to open the season, winning the first and final games of the series. Chicago managed 10+ hits in all four games, the third time in franchise history it has done so to open a season (five in 1945; four in 2000).

● Yoan Moncada went 8-for-18 (.444) in the opening series, including two homers. Moncada also had three doubles, making him the sixth player in franchise history with five extra-base hits in the first four team games of a season and the first since A.J. Pierzynski (2008).

● Michael Kopech had a .157 opponent average at home last season, second in MLB behind Houston’s Cristian Javier (.154, minimum 200 batters faced). It was the lowest home average by a South Sider (min. 200 BF) since Eddie Fisher had a .131 mark in 1964.

TWINS (3-0) at MARLINS (1-3)

● The Twins and Marlins will meet for just the seventh series all-time and the first since 2019, when Minnesota took two of three in Miami. The Twins hold a slight 9-7 edge in the all-time series, but the clubs have split their eight matchups in South Florida.

● Minnesota swept a three-game set in Kansas City to open the season, the first time since 2017 the Twins have won their first three games and the first time since 2003 that they did so on the road. Each of the first two wins came by an identical 2-0 score, marking the first time in franchise history the team earned a shutout win in each of its first two games.

● Byron Buxton had two hits in each game of the opening series and scored three runs – including both of Saturday’s scores. He’s the first Twins player to record multiple hits in his first three games of a season since Sam Fuld did so in April 2014. No Twin has done so in four straight since Randy Johnson in 1982.

● Tyler Mahle had a 1.04 WHIP in four starts after being traded to Minnesota last season. He had a 1.04 WHIP (7-3 team record) over his last ten starts after posting a 1.37 WHIP over his first 13 starts last season (4-9 team record).

● Miami dropped three games of its four-game set against the Mets, failing to score more than three runs in any of the four games. It’s just the second time in franchise history that the Marlins have been held to three runs or fewer in each of their first four games, also doing so in 1994.

● Johnny Cueto will make his Marlins debut after pitching 158.1 innings for the White Sox last season, his most since 2016. The veteran needs just seven wins to become the fifth Dominican-born pitcher to reach 150 wins, joining Bartolo Colon (247), Juan Marichal (243), Pedro Martinez (219) and Ervin Santana (151).

CUBS (1-2) at REDS (2-1)

● The Reds are 34-33 against the Cubs since 2019, tied for their best record against any NL Central opponent (Pirates) over that span, including 20-16 at Great American Ball Park.

● Through the opening weekend of the season, Cubs’ pitching has the second-lowest starting pitching ERA in the National League (1.69) and the second-highest bullpen ERA in the NL (7.36).

● Dansby Swanson is hitting .583 (7-for-12) in his first three games for the Cubs, the best mark by a player in their first three games as a Cub (min. 10 PA) since Kyle Schwarber in 2015 (.600).

● The Reds have the second-highest slugging percentage in the National League thus far at .495, including 11 extra base hits. Last season, the Reds had the third-lowest slugging percentage in the NL (.372).

● Among active players, Joey Votto has the most career home runs against the Cubs with 48, with the next highest being Paul Goldschmidt at 29. Among Reds players, only Frank Robinson has more all-time with 53.

● Jonathan India has reached base safely twice in all three of the Reds’ games so far this season. The last Red to reach base multiple times in four or more games to begin a season was Nick Castellanos (four games) in 2021.

RAYS (3-0) at NATIONALS (1-2)

● The Nationals have won their last six home games against the Rays, sweeping two-game series in 2018, 2020 and 2021. They outscored Tampa Bay, 45-17, in those six games.

● The Rays have won their first three games of a season for the fourth time in team history. They also did that in 2002, 2012 and 2022. Tampa Bay has never started a season with more than three consecutive wins.

● Wander Franco is 7-for-11 (.636) in the Rays’ three games this season, with at least two hits in each game. Franco is the fourth player in Rays history with two or more hits in each of the team’s first three games of a season. The others are Quinton McCracken in 1998 (Tampa Bay’s first season in MLB), John Flaherty in 2000 and Melvin Upton Jr. in 2007.

● Drew Rasmussen was one of six MLB pitchers with 25 or more starts, an ERA below 3.00, and an average of fewer than two walks per nine innings last season. The others were Sandy Alcantara, Tyler Anderson, Shane Bieber, Max Fried and Justin Verlander.

● The Nationals had only two hits in 19 at-bats with runners in scoring position (.105) in their season-opening three-game series against the Braves, and both hits were singles (one each by Joey Meneses and Dominic Smith). Washington had only 92 extra-base hits with RISP last season, fourth fewest in the majors (Detroit 70, Oakland 90, Pittsburgh 90).

● Trevor Williams signed with the Nationals as a free agent after pitching in 30 games for the Mets last season (nine starts and 21 relief appearances). Williams was 2-0 with a 2.05 ERA and only three home runs allowed in 44.0 innings over his final 15 games last season. He was 1-5 with a 4.34 ERA and nine homers allowed in 45.2 IP in his first 15 games last year.

PHILLIES (0-3) at YANKEES (2-1)

● The Phillies and Yankees have played 38 interleague games against each other with each team winning 19 times. The only other National League teams the Yankees do not have a winning record against in interleague play are the Brewers (7-8 since they joined the NL in 1998) and Dodgers (8-8).

● The Phillies have started a season with three consecutive losses for the first time since 2016, when they lost their first four games. The Phillies led 5-0 in the middle of the fourth inning of their season opener at Texas, but they were outscored 29-6 by the Rangers over the remainder of the three-game series.

● Taijuan Walker signed with the Phillies as a free agent after spending the past two seasons with the Mets. Walker pitched a team-high 316.1 innings in his two seasons with the Mets, over 100 innings more than the Met with the second highest total, Carlos Carrasco (205.2). Walker led Mets pitchers in wins (19) and losses (16) during his two seasons with the club.

● The Yankees hit seven home runs in their season-opening three-game series against the Giants, with at least two in each game. This is the fifth time the Yankees started a season with three or more consecutive multiple-homer games. They also did so in 1969 (first four games), 1981 (three), 2003 (four) and 2011 (five).

● Anthony Volpe is the fifth player since 1901 to begin his major-league career with a stolen base in each of his first three games. The other players to do that are Fritz Maisel (1913 Yankees), Ray Lankford (1990 Cardinals), Pat Howell (1992 Mets), and Billy Hamilton, the only player to record a steal in each of his first four MLB games (2013 Reds).

● Last year, Nestor Cortes (12-4, 2.44 ERA) became the third Yankees pitcher in the expansion era with 12 or more wins, a winning percentage of .750 or higher, and an ERA below 2.50 in one season. The other Yankees pitchers to do that since 1961 are Ron Guidry in 1978 (25-3, 1.74 ERA) and Rudy May in 1980 (15-5, 2.46 ERA).

PIRATES (1-2) at RED SOX (2-1)

● The Red Sox own a 10-8 all-time advantage against the Pirates, taking two of three games when the teams met in Pittsburgh last season. The Pirates have never won a series against the Red Sox in Boston.

● While Pirates starters compiled a 6.28 ERA in the season-opening series in Cincinnati, the bullpen put up a 2.53 ERA over 10.2 IP. Last year, Bucs relievers ranked next-to-last in the majors with a 4.71 ERA.

● Bryan Reynolds homered Sunday and is hitting .301/.356/.559 with seven homers and 15 RBI in 23 road games since Aug. 14. He went 5-for-11 (.455) with three homers and six RBI in a three-game series against the Red Sox last August at PNC Park.

● The Red Sox are 5-1 all-time against Pittsburgh at Fenway Park but were one of five AL teams with losing records in interleague play last season. They're trying to win back-to-back series to begin the season for the first time since 2018, when they opened 9-1.

● Adam Duvall joined Xander Bogaerts (2018) as the only players in Red Sox history with six extra-base hits in the season's first three games. He's also the fourth Red Sox player with as many as eight RBI in the opening three games (Ted Williams, 9, 1942; Bobby Doerr, 9, 1942; Brock Holt, 8, 2016).

● After going 7-for-15 (.467) with four runs scored against Baltimore, Rafael Devers is trying to become the first Red Sox player with multiple hits in the first four games of the season since Jose Iglesias in 2013. Jose Offerman has the longest season-opening streak in team history (6, 1999).

BLUE JAYS (1-2) at ROYALS (0-3)

● The Blue Jays have won their last three series against the Royals, outscoring them by 29 runs. This is the first time they have won three straight series against Kansas City since 2003-2004 (also three series) and are looking to win four straight series against them for the second time ever (1998-1999).

● Toronto, who hit seven home runs within the first three games last season, are one of two teams without a home run this season (Milwaukee). This is the first time in franchise history they have failed to hit a home run within their first three games of the season.

● Bo Bichette (six hits, one strikeout) is one of four players this season with at least six hits and one or zero strikeouts within their first three team games. He is the first Blue Jays player to do this since Vernon Wells in 2010 (six hits, one strikeout).

● The Royals were shutout in each of their first two games of the season, becoming the first MLB team to do so since the Dodgers in 2018. Kansas City is just the fifth American League team to do this all-time, joining the Minnesota Twins (2015), Seattle Mariners (1977), Cleveland Indians (1947), and Washington Senators (1940).

● Salvador Perez is the only Royals player this season and one of three catchers overall (Logan O’Hoppe, Cal Raleigh) to have at least one hit in each of their first three team games of the season. This is the fifth time Perez has done this in his career (2020, 2013-2015).

● Matt Duffy (two hits, two RBI, one home run) became the first player to have multiple hits, multiple runs batted in, and a home run in their first career game with the Royals since.

BRAVES (2-1) at CARDINALS (2-1)

● Michael A. Taylor on April 1, 2021 (two hits, three runs batted in, one home run). He is the only third baseman and sixth player overall to do this in Royals franchise history.

● The Braves won their regular-season series against the Cardinals in each of the last four years in which they faced each other (4-2 in 2018, 4-2 in 2019, 6-1 in 2021, 4-3 in 2022), but St. Louis won the teams’ only postseason matchup over that span (3-2 in the 2019 NLDS).

● Atlanta hit four home runs in its three-game series in Washington, all in the team’s 7-1 win on Saturday. The Braves hit four or more home runs in a game 10 times last season, tying them with the Orioles for fourth most in the majors, behind the Yankees (18), Astros (12) and Phillies (12).

● Charlie Morton is one of only three pitchers to record 200 or more strikeouts in each of the last four full major-league seasons (2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022). The others are Gerrit Cole and Aaron Nola.

● The Cardinals are one of the four MLB teams that have not been charged with an error this season, along with the Mets, Pirates and Rangers. St. Louis committed the fewest errors of any major-league team last season (66).

● Paul Goldschmidt had two hits in each of the three games in the Cardinals’ season-opening series against the Blue Jays. Goldschmidt had 49 multiple-hit games last season, the most by a St. Louis player and seventh most in the National League.

● Jake Woodford was 3-0 with a 1.53 ERA over his final 18 appearances for the Cardinals last season (one start and 17 relief games). Woodford allowed only five runs, four walks and no home runs in 29.1 innings over those 18 appearances.

ORIOLES (1-2) at RANGERS (3-0)

● The Orioles' six-game winning streak against the Rangers is their longest in the series since a seven-game stretch from July 10, 2013-June 4, 2014. They swept a three-game series at Globe Life Field last August and have won five of their last six games in Texas.

● After going 1-4 with a 7.38 ERA in his first 10 starts last season, Kyle Bradish went 3-3 with a 3.28 ERA in 13 starts following a stint on the IL with right shoulder inflammation. He allowed one run on three hits over 5.0 IP in his only start against Texas on August 3 in Arlington.

● Cedric Mullins went 5-for-13 (.385) with a pair of homers over the weekend in Boston and became the first player to drive in seven runs in the Orioles' first three games of the season since Chris Davis (13) in 2013. He's batting .400/.520/.650 with five RBI and six runs scored in his last five games against Texas.

● Before taking all three games from Philadelphia over the weekend, the Rangers hadn't won a season-opening series since 2019 and hadn't swept one since 2011. They're three games over .500 for the first time since August 7, 2019 (58-55).

● Jon Gray has never won his season debut, going 0-2 with a 5.54 ERA in eight starts for the Rockies and Rangers. He lasted 1.1 IP against Baltimore last Aug. 1 and gave up four runs -- three earned -- on four hits before landing on the IL with a strained left oblique muscle.

● Nathaniel Lowe has a .396/.453/.625 slash line, three homers, eight RBI and eight runs scored during a 12-game hitting streak against Baltimore. It's the longest by a Ranger against any team since Nomar Mazara had a 14-game streak against Seattle from September 2018-May 2019.

TIGERS (0-3) at ASTROS (2-2)

● Houston won all seven meetings with Detroit last season, the second time in franchise history the Astros have swept a season series of seven games or more (2018, 7-0 vs White Sox). It was the third time in Tigers history that they were swept in a season series of seven games or more, also falling to the Athletics in 2018 (0-7) and the Indians in 1996 (0-12).

● Detroit was swept in Tampa Bay to open the season, getting outscored 21-3 over the threegame set. That minus-18 run differential is tied with the Phillies for the worst in MLB this season and is the second-worst through three games in franchise history (-22 in 1977).

● Matthew Boyd returns to Detroit after making 10 relief appearances for the Mariners last season, posting a .116 opponent average in 13.1 innings. The southpaw has a career 3-1 record against the Astros, including a quality start win in his last start in Houston. He also threw eight pitches against the Astros in the 16th inning of Game 3 of the ALDS last postseason, getting a popout before allowing a hit and a walk.

● Houston split a four-game set with the White Sox, scoring 14 of its 17 runs in the sixth inning or later. The Astros slashed .322/.437/.441 from the sixth inning on while striking out just 14 times compared to .145/.272/.159 with 27 strikeouts in the first five innings.

● Jose Abreu recorded a hit in each game of the four-game set against his former team, including two hits and an RBI in each of the last two games. He looks to be the first Astro to open his Houston career with a five-game hit streak since Tyler White in 2016 and the first non-rookie to do so since Gregorio Petit (2014).

● Hunter Brown will make his season debut against his hometown team after posting a 0.89 ERA in 20.1 innings last season as well as 3.2 shutout innings in the playoffs. The Detroit native pitched at Comerica Park in his last start on September 13, allowing his only two career runs and notching a career-high six strikeouts over six innings.

GUARDIANS (3-1) at ATHLETICS (1-2)

● The Guardians' five-game winning streak in Oakland is their longest in the series since 2001- to-2002 and their longest on the road against any team since a nine-game streak in Kansas City from 2020-to-2021. Cleveland has won six of the last seven meetings overall.

● Zach Plesac lost eight of his last nine decisions last season and pitched into the sixth inning four times in his final nine starts. He gave up two runs on four hits over 6.0 IP in his only start in Oakland on July 18, 2021.

● Steven Kwan has a career .329/.412/.477 triple slash against his own division since entering the league last season. He hit safely in all five games he played against Oakland last year, batting .381/.409/.381 with three runs scored.

● In losing their season-opening series sixth time in seven years, the Athletics batted .178 -- their lowest average through three games since 1980 (.168). Detroit is the only team in the majors with fewer plate appearances (12) with runners in scoring position than Oakland (14) so far in 2023.

● While James Kaprielian ranked 21st in the AL with a .239 opponents' batting average last season (minimum 25 starts), he averaged 3.96 walks per nine innings, which was fifth highest in the league. He issued 59 walks, the most by an Athletics pitcher since Sonny Gray (59) in 2015.

● Seth Brown has a .949 OPS, five homers and 11 RBI in 13 games against Cleveland. He's homered in his last three games against the Guardians -- the last member of the Athletics with a longer streak against one team was Khris Davis, who went yard in six consecutive games against Texas in 2018.

ANGELS (2-1) at MARINERS (1-3)

● Los Angeles took 10 of its 19 games against Seattle last season and each team hit 22 home runs in the season series. The Mariners batted .219 in their 19 games versus the Angels last season, tied for their lowest average in any single season series versus Los Angeles all-time.

● Reid Detmers had a 3.36 ERA and allowed two home runs in 59.0 innings (0.31 home runs per nine) after the All-Star break last season. Among pitchers with at least 50.0 innings pitched after the break, Detmers' 0.31 home runs per nine rate was the fourth best in that span (Jose Quintana – 0.12; George Kirby – 0.14; Justin Verlander – 0.14).

● Taylor Ward is 6-for-10 with a home run and four RBI in his two games played this April. Ward has a .426/.514/.803 triple slash in April of last season and this season combined, all three of which lead the majors.

● Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani hit back-to-back home runs off Ken Waldichuk in the fifth inning of their previous game, a win over Oakland. This is the sixth time that Trout and Ohtani have hit back-to-back home runs, and the Angels are 3-3 in those games.

● George Kirby allowed a homer in his last start, ending his consecutive batters faced streak without allowing a home run at 309. The last Mariners' pitcher to have a longer such streak was Felix Hernandez when he had a streak of 329 between April and June of 2014.

● Julio Rodriguez had two hits on Sunday bringing his career hit total to 151 in 136 games. Rodriguez's 136 games to reach the 150-hit mark with the Mariners only trails Ichiro Suzuki's 102 games for the fewest to reach the milestone.

DIAMONDBACKS (2-2) at PADRES (2-2)

● The Padres have won the last six series (min. three games) against the Diamondbacks, their longest active such streak against any opponent. This is tied for their fourth longest such streak all-time and longest since winning six straight series of three games or more against the Pirates (2005-2008).

● Ryne Nelson had three starts with an opponent batting average of .145 in 18.1 innings in his first MLB season. Only two other Arizona pitchers have previously had an opponent batting average lower than .150 in 15+ innings pitched in their first three career games (Archie Bradley – .119 AVG, 18.2 IP; Brandon Webb – .122 AVG, 15.0 IP).

● Corbin Carroll stole three bases in Sunday's 2-1 victory over the Dodgers. Carroll is the first Arizona rookie to ever have three stolen bases in a game and he is the first rookie since Michael Harris ll did so on July 16, 2022; the only such game in the previous three seasons.

● Christian Walker hit six home runs against the Padres last season, his most against any single opponent. This is tied for the second most home runs by a Diamondbacks player in a single season versus the Padres (2011 Justin Upton, 7 home runs).

● Ryan Weathers owns a 6.53 ERA and .299 opponent batting average in 19 career starts; as reliever he has a 2.49 ERA and .231 opponent batting average in 12 appearances.

● Xander Bogaerts (six hits, four extra-base hits, five runs batted in) is the second Padres player all-time to have at least six hits, four extra-base hits, and five runs batted in within their first four games with the team. He joins Carlos Quentin in 2012 (eight hits, six extrabase hits, 7 runs batted in).
