From Offices of Stats Perform: Quick Hits on Series That Begin Thursday

TWINS (14-27) at ANGELS (18-24)

● Prior to having the final two games of their series postponed, the Angels beat the Twins on April 16, 10-3, snapping their five-game losing streak against Minnesota. LA has not won a series when hosting the Twins since 2016.

● Minnesota dropped its third straight series and fell to an AL-worst 14-27 after losing two of three against the White Sox. The Twins have allowed opponents to score 217 runs this year, second most in the AL (LAA - 233), after yielding only 215 in 2020, second fewest in the AL.

● The Angels lost two of three against Cleveland, falling to 6-12 in May after going 12-12 in April. Last month, LA ranked third in the AL in runs per game (4.8) and second in batting average (.262), but it ranks 13th in both categories in May, averaging 4.0 runs with a .228 BA.

● Nelson Cruz hit his 10th homer of the year and the 427th of his career yesterday, tying Mike Piazza for the 50th most all-time. Cruz is one of three players leading his team outright in hits, runs and RBI in 2021, along with Seattle’s Mitch Haniger and Washington’s Trea Turner.

● Jared Walsh hit his eighth homer of the year last night, giving him a 1.003 OPS for the month of May. He has a .971 OPS since the start of last year, the third-best mark in the AL during that span (min. 200 PA), behind only Mike Trout (1.029) and Bryon Buxton (.984). ●

With six strikeouts in his last outing, Jose Berrios reached 700 for his career in his 124th game. That is the second-fewest games needed to reach that mark by any player in franchise history, as Bert Blyleven did so in his 122nd game as a Twin.

PIRATES (17-25) at BRAVES (20-23)

● The Braves went 10-3 against the Pirates from 2018 to 2019 and are 10-4 when hosting them since 2016, including winning each of the last six. Atlanta’s four-game sweep in Pittsburgh’s last visit in June 2019 was the last time the Braves swept any four-game set.

● Pittsburgh went 0-2 in its two-game set in St. Louis, falling to 5-14 in its last 19 games and 5- 12 in May. The Pirates are scoring an MLB-low 2.8 runs per game this month – that is on pace to be their second-lowest average in any single month since 1999 (April 2012 – 2.6).

● Atlanta dropped two of three to the Mets but snapped a three-game losing streak and a fivegame home losing streak with a 5-4 walkoff win yesterday. The Braves are 10-13 in Atlanta this season after going 19-11 at home in 2020.

● Adam Frazier had two hits yesterday, giving him 11 in his last five games. He leads MLB this year in multi-hit games with 17 (tied with Trea Turner) and ranks second in the majors in hits with 54 (Xander Bogaerts, Bos – 55).

● Ronald Acuna Jr. hit his NL-leading 13th home run of the season and his first career walkoff homer last night. He ranks second in the majors this season in both home runs (Shohei Ohtani – 14) and slugging percentage (.629, Nick Castellanos, Cin - .642).

● After going 0-2 with an 8.05 ERA through his first four starts of the year, Drew Smyly is 2-0 with two runs allowed (one earned) over 12.0 innings in his last two. He has not won three straight starts since August 2016 with Tampa Bay.
