The Post-Season Races: The End In Sight

It’s game 161 on Saturday and the possibility exists that by the time the day comes to an end baseball’s initial post-season schedule will be in place. Two places remain — the battle between the Yankees and Red Sox to decide which one will be the AL East champion and which one will be the No. 1 AL Wild-Card, and the Rockies and Brewers quest to be the second NL Wild-Card. The Yankees and the Rockies both go into Saturday with a Magic No. 1 for the Red Sox to be AL East champions and the Rockies to earn a wild-card berth for the fourth time in their 25-year existence.

Post-Season 2017

AL East: Red Sox or Yankees

AL Central: Indians

AL West: Astros

AL Wild-Cards: (1) Red Sox or Yankees and (2) Twins.

NL East: Nationals

NL Central: Cubs

NL West: Dodgers

NL Wild-Cards: (1) D-Backs and (2) Rockies or Brewers

NL Wild-Card

The battle between the Rockies and Brewers has the biggest implications on Saturday. The Rockies can clinch the wild-card and a Wednesday game against the D-Backs in Arizona with a win Saturday or Sunday or a Brewers loss either day. The Brewers need a Game 163 to advance. They need to claim wins in St. Louis against the Cardinals Saturday and Sunday, combined with losses by the Rockies to the Dodgers at Coors Field both days, to finish the regular season tied with the Rockies, which would force the Game 163, which would be at Coors Field on Monday night.

While the Rockies were clinching only their sixth season-series success against the Dodgers (10-7 with two games to play) on Friday night the Brewers beat the Cardinals 5-3 at Busch Stadium to keep the race alive.
