Division Series: Did you know . . .

Clayton Kershaw

Clayton Kershaw has been the most dominant pitcher in the regular season of his era. The post-season, however, has been another story. At least his post-season debut in 2017 had a happy ending. Kershaw picked up the victory in the Dodgers 9-5 win against the D-Backs in Game 1 of the best-of-five NLDS at Dodger Stadium. Kershaw, however, did give up four solo home runs in his 6 1/3 innings, equaling a post-season record for home runs. He is the ninth pitcher to allow four home runs in a post-season game.

But Kershaw did win, which has been a challenge for him during the month of October in his career.

Indians 9, Yankees 8 (Indians lead best-of-five series 2-0)

The Yankees went into the fourth inning with an 8-3 lead but they couldn’t maintain it. The Indians rallied for four in the sixth and another run in the eighth, and won the game 9-8 in 13 innings to send the Yankees back home still looking for a post-season victory. It equaled the 12th longest game in post=season history, coming up five innings short of the record set in the Astros 7-6, 18 inning win against the Braves in the 2005 NLDS and matched by the giants in a 2-1 victory against the Nationals in the 2014 NLCS.

ALTUVE, HURRAY

Jose Altuve

With Jose Altuve again putting on a show for the Astros, Houston beat the Red Sox 8-2. Altuve hit .714 in the first two games of the Divisional Series, which would equal the highest post-season average in a Division Series if he maintains.  Rockies Dante Bichette, in 1995, and Carlos Gonazles, in 2009, both hit .588, which would be tied for 10th if Altuve maintains. Altuve had three home runs in Thursday’s opener, the 10th player in MLB history to have three home runs in a post-season game.
