Iannetta Returns to Rockies on 2-year Deal

Chris Iannetta

Catcher Chris Iannetta returned to the Rockies on Friday, signing a two-year contract. The announcement came the day after the Cubs announced the signing of right-hander Tyler Chatwood, who the Rockies acquired from the Angels in exchange for Iannetta prior to the 2012 season.

The signing of Iannetta give the Rockies a two-year window for the development of catcher Tom Murphy, who was projected to take over the job last year, but suffered a broken forearm when he was hit by a pitch in spring training, or Dom Nunez. They are the top two rated catching prospects in the system.

It also means the Rockies passed on retaining Jonathan Lucroy, who they acquired from the Rangers in late July.

Iannetta was the Rockies fourth-round draft choice in 2004 out of the University of North Carolina. He debuted with the Rockies on Aug. 27, 2006, and hit .235 in 458 games before being traded to the Angels for Chatwood.

Iannetta was the starting catcher with the Angels for four seasons, and then spent the 2015 season with the Mariners and 2016 with the Diamondbacks. He ranks ninth among catchers with at least 600 starts since the start of the 2011 season with a 26.5 percentage of catcher caught stealing.
