The Padres left the door open a crack and the Rockies weren’t about to be left out in the cold. After the Padres suffered an 11-inning loss in Milwaukee — one in which with two outs in the bottom of the ninth and a two-strike count on Tony Gwynn, Jr., Trevor Hoffman gave up a game-tying single — the Rockies knew they had avoided elimination in the battle for the NL Wild-Card. They kept the pressure on the Padres with an 11-1 victory against the D-Backs, which clinched the NL West title when the Padres lost.
Matt Holiday keyed a four-run first inning with a two-run double, and Troy Tulowitzki made the final statement, finishing off a six-run fifth inning with a grand slam that gave the Rockies the final margin of victory. It was the team record eighth grand slam of the season for the Rockies.
